Ensemble42 is an artist collective of classical musicians that have the purpose of helping disadvantaged children worldwide through a variety of activities including but not restricted to benefit concerts, cultural exchanges, educative projects, and solidarity concerts. Children, especially in war situations, are physically and mentally traumatized when the support network around them disintegrates. It is with not only direct aid in the form of food, clean water, sanitation, and medicine that they can be helped, but also in the form of cultural outreach programs to give them a sense of worth, a method of intellectual and emotional development, and a boost in mental health. The advantages of artistic engagement, especially musically, have been amply documented, and we believe that music can be a very strong method of stimulating the advancement of peaceful communication. In short, our goal is to help a new generation of children to become good world citizens.
The concept of an artist collective is one of flexibility. The core group consists of professional singers and string players that perform in a variety of settings including a-cappella chamber choir, string orchestra, and chamber music groups. An amateur chamber choir called Amsterdam24 is the second branch of the organization. Both groups have the goal of bringing classical music at the highest level to their audiences in order to support the causes mentioned above.
The first project in which Ensemble42 came together was the benefit concert Troost, which took place on December 15th in the church Vrijburg. Fifty-four professional singers, string players, and amateur singers came together under the direction of Hebe de Champeaux in order to raise money for the children of Gaza, who were suffering under relentless bombardment from Operation Swords of Iron. A total of six-thousand eight hundred and eleven euros were raised within a period of only two weeks for this cause. It was because of the huge success of this project that enough momentum was reached to officially establish Ensemble42.
